During this COVID-19 epidemic, we need to maintain a strong immune system so our bodies are able to fight off cold, infection, and viruses.

“Eighty percent of your immune system is in the gut, so when it’s healthy, we tend to be able to fight off infections faster and better,” says Yufang Lin, M.D., of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. “When it’s not, our immune system is weaker and more susceptible to fighting off infection.”

So how do Lotus Chips figure into the goal of maintaining a strong immune system?

Vitamin C is at the top of the list of essential nutrients for strengthening our immune systems.  Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant which helps fight free radicals, a type of unstable molecule known to damage the immune system.  Of course many fruits are known for being rich in Vitamin C, but many vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and peppers have very high levels of Vitamin C as well as Vitamin E, Vitamin A, anti-oxidants, beta carotene, and other elements that help our immune system.

Overall, Lotus Root is one of the most nutritional vegetables. Its benefits range from reducing cholesterol, increasing blood circulation, improving digestion, clearing the respiratory system, improving brain functions, and providing heart benefits.  But for this discussion on the immune system, it is the Lotus Roots’ extremely high Vitamin C content which pushes it high on the list of go-to foods.

For an honest discussion of healthy food selection, we need to also consider the food’s actual cooking and preparation. Ideally, for your main course items, you’ll want to only lightly cook your broccoli and spinach to release vitamins and nutrients but absolutely avoid over-cooking which destroys all of that goodness.

Frankly, frying is not a process that is friendly to the immune system.   But our Lotus Chip is a fried chip – so where does that leave us??

Well, a discussion about frying is really a discussion about oil. At Good Roots we go to great effort and expense to use Rice Bran Oil for frying and not Canola Oil and other less healthy alternatives.  Our Non-GMO Rice Bran Oil contains good fats, reduces cholesterol, and has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which overcomes many of the problems associated with more common frying oils. It also is rich in Vitamin E which also aids the immune system.

Ultimately, Good Roots Lotus Chips are most commonly consumed as a snack. Rest assured, that snack aisle in your local market is overflowing with items like sugary snacks, snacks with highly processed additives, sodas, and other things that literally harm your immune system and weaken your body’s ability to defend itself.

Be mindful of your needs and your choices.

Stay good!
